McCue and Martin family papers 1817-1944 (bulk 1860-1865).

The collection contains a license to work a still, 1817, awarded to John McCue. Civil War era items include a letter, 1860 June 27, from an unidentified correspondent to her daughter, conveying family news and discussing the [Methodist] church conference that debated the slavery issue; letter, 1865 June 27, John McCue to his wife discussing conditions in Richmond; a manuscript copy of court proceedings in Baltimore, Md., 1865, hearing charges against John W. McCue as a "Guerilla of the so-called Southern Confederacy" with confirmation of the finding of guilty and subsequent sentence of imprisonment and hard labor by General Lew Wallace. Also a diary, 1865, of John H. McCue and his son John W. McCue who rode with John S. Mosby; John H. McCue's oath of allegiance, 1865 June; and a Southern Cross of Honor awarded to John H. McCue by the United Daughters of the Confederacy. The collection also contains a V-mail letter from "Nat," a former family servant, to Perry Archer, 1944 December 10, sending thanks for a Christmas box.
